Melvyl and the Bloodied Pyrium

So, like most people, I have been working on gearing up one of my characters. In my case, Melvyl, who I still consider “my main” hence the name I use here. My basic plan is to do what I did with 3.3 – gear him largely as Retribution, than take up healing when I am satisfied that I am geared enough to avoid the average disaster. While it was a little easier back then, it has been going okay thus far. Now here’s the point of this post: He is wearing four pieces of PVP gear – not counting the relic (which I consider a huge upgrade over the ilevel318 quest piece).

Bloodied Pyrium Shoulders – 4 of 4. The only thing better come from Heroics or Justice Points.

Bloodied Pyrium Bracers – Not rated. No Justice Point option or Rep option. And only 3 choices, really, since the 4th is a ilevel308 item.

Bloodied Pyrium Gauntlets – Not rated. These is a Justice Point option but also a Rep option for the same ilevel.

Bloodied Pyrium Belt – Not rated. So while there is a Justice Point item,  the best choice is the very nice Rep belt.

So I either wait or buy the shoulders and just grind out the rest of the rep and/or hope for Heroic drops – which I actually haven’t started running. But I guess maybe I should start.

Well, Exemel has made it to 80 and she has a bit different gear than she had at 57. I switched her from Enhancement to Elemental/Resto at 70 so she would only have to worry about one set of gear. When she arrived at 80, she was already Heroic-eligible. But I still spent a few minutes seeing if I could improve hear gear.

Since Hallows End was running, it wasn’t simple enough to pick those up before she even hit 80.

Wrathful Gladiator’s Redoubt

Nice upgrade from Ritualistic Shield. And cheap, too, since you buy it with Honor.

War Mace of Unrequited Love

It took me almost a year to get one of those for my Paladin. I got this from her first Heroic.

For around 11G from the AH

She is now Forge of Souls eligible. Not a bad 5 minutes work.

Too Blue for Old School

In this week’s All Things Azeroth, Medros and Shade were discussing how hard it was in vanilla for a character to get a blue item prior to level 60. Since Exemel is now level 57 and will be headed for Outland in 30 seconds or so, I thought it might be interesting to take a look at what she is wearing.

Helm of Exile – a blue item from the quest Jammal’an the Prophet. I actually stumbled across the questgiver but got it down during a Sunken Temple PuG.

Emberfury Talisman – a blue item from Pyroguard Emberseer in Upper Blackrock Spire. I had never anticipated finding a group that wanted to run that, and we didn’t finish, but we got quite a ways.

Exceptional Stormshroud Shoulders – heirloom leather because I bought these for my upcoming Worgen rogue. But they work well for an Enhancement Shaman.

Destroyer’s Cloak – I have generally found capes to be the hardest thing to replace in vanilla content. This one is from the quest Direhorn Raiders. The stats on this one are really amazing for a green.

Stained Shadowcraft Tunic – another leather heirloom

Earthbound Wristguards of the Wild – Dungeon Reward

Rockgrip Guantlets – from Landslide in Maraudon

Earthbound Girdle of the Thief – Dungeon Reward

Oh, and getting Skinning to 379 doesn’t hurt in the Critical Strike Area either. But anyway, either Exemel was extremely lucky or else getting blues post-vanilla is a wee bit easier.

Almost exactly a year ago, I created a Death Knight for the Pants on Head Guild over on Jubei’thos. For those of you who don’t know, the guild is composed of the hosts and listeners of the Bind on Equip Podcast.

I got Lyvlem (Melvyl spelled backwards) out of the DK starting area pretty quickly but I haven’t spent a lot of time with them until recently. But finally, he reached 80 during a Halls of Lightning run a few minutes ago. So I thought it might be time to do another Post Series.

Another interesting thing to me in this 3.3-world: She is now exalted with the Kirin Tor, Argent Crusade, Wyrmrest Accord, and the Knights of the Ebon Blade – all without any sort of rep grind. When I think about how many dailies I did on my other toons to reach that point, this is pretty amazing.

I will still be buying things with frost badges for a while, of course, and will probably be working on her off-spec: Balance, I think.

I have pretty much followed Lathere’s guide but the pvp items were easy pickups and it made sense waiting to replace the robe until the next round.
I also completed Heroic Pit of Saron with her tonight. That wasn’t easy, but it worth it.

Only one Heroic today and I got Azjol-Nerub. Actually, I got it twice.

The first time the tank decided to pull all the watchers at once, wipe the group, then zone back in, and pull them all again before any of the rest of us were ready. We finally got the boss down and the tank tries to do the trick on Hadronox and does it badly. After the first dps left, I decided to, also.

I queued again after a couple of minutes and got AN again. Second time: no deaths, no problems, no stopping, and I still was able to keep the group alive without using Innervate once.

And Ring of the Traitor King dropped. No haste but definitely an upgrade.

Some More Leather

I was able to pick up 3 more pieces yesterdays. The Gaze of the Somber Keeper and tge Binding of the Tranquil Glade both came out of Normal Tournament of the Champion.

Later on, in Heroic Old Kingdom a Kilt of the Forgotten One dropped. Ironically, you can only tell that they are an upgrade for the cloth pants by reading the description as they share the same graphic.

I think I have now unlocked all but the last two heroics. And after 36 hours, have better gear than my Paladin namesake after 6 months. It is amazing what you can do in the game with a little help and a little experience.

Instead of GearScore, I guess I really should have been using Intellect, Crit Chance, Spellpower, and Haste (sort of like I do with my Paladin). So Int is now 908, Crit is 12.7%, SP is 1469, and Haste is 415. I will try and keep track of those as we move forward.

Mariel’s Sorrow

So last night, Aacr ran her first Heroic… Halls of Lightning. It was a bit of a challenge, but things worked out well in the end.

Today I queue and end up in Trial of the Champion – less than 24 hours after hitting 80. It went well, though, and I scored a Mariel’s Sorrow so I can’t complain.
